Macedonian Wedding Traditions Alive And Well In Perth

Wow and OMG what a day, Macedonian’s sure know how to party!! What a thrill to be involved in the celebrations that surrounded Angela and Zivko on their wedding day. By the time we arrived at Angela’s home at 9.00am we could barely find a parking spot, the cars of friends and relatives had already filled her street. Angela was tucked up in the main bedroom not being allowed in view until Zivkos’s family came to meet with the men of her family and to “seal the marriage deal”. Mean while traditional wedding celebrations were in process at Zivko’s home; guests were arriving, Zivko was being given a traditional shave by his Godfather, (with a rather alarmingly large blade), a live Macedonian band was playing traditional music, food was being prepared, there was dancing in the kitchen, there was preparation of the flag to carry to Angela’s home and bread being baked as part of the tradition of sharing the “breaking of bread” with the bride’s father.

Walking into the main bedroom we found Angela, her bridesmaids, hair dresser Jodie Fiannaca and makeup artist Barbara Mordini all hard at work. There was a huge lead up to the day and Angela had had little sleep, so had taken a power nap while the preparation was going on. With Angela not allowed in view of the guests until she was handed to Zivko’s family, we needed to take all the home photographs in the main bedroom.

At just after 11.00am Zivko’s relatives assembled at the bottom of Anelga’s street, the musicians began playing and led by the flag carrier, the family danced and sang their way up-to Angela’s home. Zivko and his groomsmen arrived and were greeted by Angela’s brother and relatives who brought him to meet with Angela’s father. Zivko’s father presented Angela’s father with the huge freshly baked bread loaf and they jointly broke bread with much merriment from both sides of the family. All the while the traditional Macedonian music was playing, guest were singing and dancing and we were madly capturing it all!

At the other end of the home Angela was doing her own deals with the groomsmen. They had brought wine and wedding shoes stuffed with $50 notes, however many more $50 notes were stuffed in the shoe until Angela was convinced it was the right shoe for her! Once the shoe fitted Angela was guided by her brother to say good-by to her family then handed over by her brother and cousin to Zivko.

Everyone headed to the Macedonian Church in Angrove Street where the wedding ceremony took place. After the cermony there were many family photographs before Angela, Zivko and the bridal party headed off for wedding photos. The reception was at the Burswood Summer Marque.

The marque was decorated in black and white by a number of Perth stylists including Nikki from Sweet Floral, Perth Classics and Wed on Beaufort. Jane from Queen of Theme decorated the outdoor area with garden furniture which made a nice retreat for a summer night. Angela and Zivko made their entrance at 6.45, and were straight into the dancing. After the first bridle waltz they were joined on the dance floor by their guests. The music and dancing went all night, stopping only briefly for the speeches.

At 12.00am an arch was formed and Anglea and Zivko made a dash for the exit. Wow, what a day and what a night, Anglea and Zivko must have felt like they’d ran a marathon!

South West Eco Wedding Makes For Magic Wedding Photography

When Gosia and Tom planned their wedding in the beautiful South West it was done with a sense of honesty and integrity. A smallish wedding with around 100 guests and no bridal party was arranged under the peppermint trees on Geograph Bay in Dunsborough. Every venue was with in easy walking distance, from the villa where Gosia prepared and dressed, to the ceremony, to the wedding photographs on the beach to the reception in Dunsborough town. No transport was necessary.

Gosia booked a fabulous roomy villa at Whalers Cove in Dunsborough. The villa, constructed from mud brick and floored with pavers was light and spacious. It had views over the grassed parkland dotted with peppermint trees through which there were glimpses to the famous Geograph Bay. When we arrived at the villa there was a sense of excitement. Gosia could barely contain herself, so eager she was to get into her bridal gown and get the show on the road. She was joined by her mum and sister as well as a few girlfriends who all shared her excitement and helped her prepare to walk down the aisle.

Meanwhile Tom was outdoors with friends adding a few touches to the area to be used for the ceremony. It was a relaxed and free spirited ceremony, in which everyone was included. The rings were passed around the guests for each person to hold and add their special blessing for Gosia and Tom. After the ceremony and while the family photographs were being taken their guests enjoyed drinks outside their villa under the peppermint trees.

As the guests departed on foot to the Samudra Restaurant in Dunsborough we photographed Tom and Gosia. We made use of the late afternoon golden sun, the beach and the wonderful colours in the coastal vegetation. The scene made for magic wedding photographs , not to forget the fabulous couple!

Gosia and Tom arrived at Samudra entering along a path lined with tea lights leading to the open air decking and a group of applauding guests. At Samudra they pride themselves on ensuring their produce is “organic, biodynamic, fair trade and sustainable”. The food was delicious and wholesome and the amazing cocktails ensured minimum damage from any alcohol the guests may have consumed. During the night the band “Spoonful of Sugar” and vocalist Karin Page (all friends of Tom’s and Gosia’s) played out on the decking and had everyone up dancing. The wedding favours provided were yummy delights from Samudra, including seeded paper for guests to plant and watch grow and flower and be reminded of a very special day with Gosia and Tom.

This wedding certainly made me think that with consideration to our environment (and perhaps our own stress levels) and being true to ourselves, how relaxed, simple and eco friendly a wedding can be.

Elegant Perth Wedding

Federica was running to schedule when we arrived at her Subiaco home, – just as we’d expect with her back ground as trouble shooter at her family’s restaurant, Perugino, in Subiaco. Her hair was styled by Lisa Emery and the finishing touches to her make up were being done by Heidi. Federica’s dress from Elle Boutuque was stylish, elegant and simply amazing! The bridesmaid wore white gowns with a Grecian touch.

We met up with Jason and the guys at Snt Joseph’s Church in Subiaco. Jason looked fabulous in his suit purchased from Parker and Co. and the guys were dressed in suits form Penguin Formal Hire. Father Jo and Federica’s Uncle who had traveled from Italy for the Perth wedding conducted the marriage ceremony. After congratulations and family photographs at the church, we headed off for wedding photos along the river and in Perth City. The bridal party were kept cool on their travels in the Showtime Limousine driven by Mike.

We arrived at Frasers Function Room at 6.00pm. The guests were enjoying horsd’oeuvres and anti pasta freshly prepared to order by a chef at an outdoor kitchen. They were later seated indoors to enjoy the amazing view from the newly renovated function room with views over the Swan River and Perth City lights. The only extras added to the fabulous room were table flowers by Divine Flowers. FederiEntres were being served as we left Federica and Jason to enjoy the fabulous meal, view and company of their family and friends.

Bollywood Comes To Perth Weddings

Cottesloe Civic Centre and The WA Maritime Museum were the fabulous venue choices made by Shagun and Kylie for their December Perth wedding. We started the day meeting with Kylie, her bridesmaids and her mum while the makeup artist (Renae Huntley) and hairdresser (Trish Crisa from Bridal Classic’s) were putting the finishing touches to the girls lips and curls! The flowers from Flowers by Michelle looked gorgeous. The wedding dress Kylie chose (from Hob Nob) was the first she tried, the style was “Sari” which she took as being a good omen as she was to marry Shagun who is Indian.

The ceremony was conducted by Shagun’s aunt who had especially studied the Cert 4 to be certified and registered as a Wedding Celebrant. It was the first wedding she had presided over, but you wouldn’t have known as she appeared amazingly calm! After the ceremony and the family photographs Kylie, Shagun and the bridal party were driven in a Fremantle Tram into Fremantle for the wedding photoshoot. We finished up at the WA Maritime Museum for the final shots of the day.

When we arrived at the Maritime Museum the wedding guests were having drinks and nibbles on the outdoor top deck. It was a fabulous setting for a warm Perth summer evening. To add a little Indian flavour, Kylie and Shagun had payed special attention to decorating the decking with lanterns, daybeds, couches and cushions so that guests were enticed to enjoy the evening with drinks outdoors, it looked magical. Later in the evening they’d arranged for a gelato bar so their friends and family could enjoy ice-cream! After the formal part of the evening was over and carrying on with the Indian influence, a little bit of Bollywood style was introduced. Kylie with the assistance of Shagun’s aunt and cousin changed into a sari to start off the Bollywood dancing. The guy who could best display his dancing style with Kylie was rewarded with the garter! This definitely made for much fun and laughter.

After the Perth wedding and a honeymoon in Bora Bora, Kylie and Shagun headed to India so celebrate their wedding in true Indian style! This time their Perth family and friends travelled to join in the celebrations.

One of the really great aspects of photographing Perth weddings is the variety of cultures we have. It’s always such a joy and a privilege to witness the blend of cultures and to see the traditions of the various cultures celebrated.

Perth’s New Years Eve Wedding

What better way to celebrate the beginnings of a marriage than to mark the occasion on the beginning of a New Year. This is just what Cat and Guy did! Cat having travelled from New Zealand to work in London and Guy having traveled from WA to work in London, miraculously came across each other while Guy was working on “things IT” under Cat’s work desk. Guy must have done the job well as it was the start of a romance. They eventually came back to Perth and were joined by Cat’s family from New Zealand and friends and family from around the world on their wedding day on the 31st December 2011.

With her own home looking packed to the rafters with family visiting from NZ, Cat’s sister in law to be Marie, offered her home to the bridal party for their preparations. When we arrived the flowers from Urban Flowers had been delivered, Cat’s make was done by Kristina Dimetrio and the finishing touches to her hair was being done by Narelle Glossop from Wedding Belles. The girls were soon ready and it wasn’t hard to get fabulous photographs of the three of them.

The setting for the ceremony was the Sunken Garden at UWA, perfect for a late afternoon in summer. The guys were looking relaxed and chatting with Marriage Celebrant Teresa Guest in the shade of the trees surrounding the Sunken Garden when we arrived prior to the ceremony. From the moment Cat and Guy walked back up the isle together the party atmosphere was evident. They were shrouded with hugs and kisses from family and friends as they made their way down the white carpet.

After many family and friends photographs we moved around the grounds of UWA for wedding photographs before dropping into the little blue boat shed on Mounts Bay Road on our way back to The Boatshed Restaurant in South Perth for the reception. Cat, Guy and their bridal party were driven in the comfort of a limo from Wicked Limos and arrived at 7.00pm to continue partying with family and friends.

The bridal party entered to music supplied by Da Doo Ron Ron and got straight on to the dance floor setting the party atmosphere for the night. From the dance floor Cat and Guy cut the cake and them straight in to a couple of very humous speeches from each of them. We finished the photographs with some wonderful evening shots overlooking the city. Cat and Guy and their guests partied on into the New Year on the banks of the Swan River overlooking the city of Perth. Now that will be a New Years Eve to remember!
